Garage Gyms 101

Anyone interested in at home gym equipment knows that right now is a tough time to make the investment. Covid-19 has increased demand to historic highs and companies are finding issues keeping up with demand. And price gouging is occurring at obscene levels! As such, it may be wise to hold off on making the jump until things stabilize. And I wouldn’t be surprised if there is a flood of lightly used gym equipment that hits the secondary market once gyms re-open.
I started my garage gym in December of 2017 and it has been one of the best decisions I’ve made, well at least when it comes to health and fitness. Having a place to workout that is readily available is a true game changer and one that I think many can benefit from.
So what is needed? First off a space is required, I know.. kind of a no brainer. This space can be big or it can be small. There are options for all sorts of spaces. Next up are some weights. Typically a barbell and some plates are the best route to go. Whether you choose to go with bumpers or steel depends on your lifting habits and style. When I first put together my gym, I had a newborn who was sleeping right above my garage so I decided bumpers would be the quieter option even though I don’t do oly style lifts. And they are still the main workhorse in the gym and now my wife really enjoys using them. With a barbell and a set of plates in hand, I’m always amazed at how much you can do when it comes to working out.
My next recommendation, now that you have a barbell and plates, would be to invest in a bench and to consider purchasing a power rack. I’m a big fan of racks, especially when training at home and alone. They provide us people who like to workout on our own, the peace of mind that no matter how much weight we are trying to move we will be doing so in a safe manner. The price range on racks varies tremendously, I’ve seen some from $200 all the way to $8000. It all depends on what you want to get out of it.
For all these items there are many different companies to choose from. My best bet is to do your homework and don’t be afraid to splurge a bit. These are important items that will be with you for years to come. Investing in quality equipment will always pay off in the long run.
